Self-directed Support was introduced in Scotland to allow greater choice and control for people using social care. The system aims to ensure a more personalised approach to social care, where users are equal partners in decisions about their care.

This research presents evidence about different experiences of Self-directed Support. It draws together lessons learned about how these experiences interact with people’s protected characteristics. The findings increase our understanding and awareness of how the current system helps or prevents people from achieving their personal outcomes, and the impact this has on equality.

This report supports our work in Scotland to ensure that equality is embedded into social care reform and the creation of a National Care Service.
