Lammy Review: police commitment needed to reduce race inequality

Wedi ei gyhoeddi: 11 Awst 2021

Commenting on the Government’s response to the Lammy Review, Equality and Human Rights Commission Chair David Isaac said:

The issues David Lammy identified in his report need a joined-up approach to resolve them. The Government has taken the Lammy Review seriously and responded quickly to its recommendations. However, to address the deep inequalities in society we need a comprehensive and coordinated race strategy.

As the first point of contact with the criminal justice system, the police service must be part of the solution; yet the majority of police and crime plans do not include a commitment to reduce race inequality. Police and Crime Commissioners must urgently clarify how they will meet their legal duty to advance equality.

Notes to editors

The Lammy Review, chaired by David Lammy MP, is an independent review of the treatment of, and outcomes for, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals in the Criminal Justice System. Find out more about the Lammy Review on GOV.UK.
