Response to proposed Human Rights Act reforms

Published: 14 December 2021

Responding to the Government's proposals to reform the Human Rights Act, Baroness Kishwer Falkner, Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said:

The Human Rights Act plays a vital role in protecting everyone in the UK. It enabled the families of those who died at Hillsborough football ground to expose the truth and hold authorities to account, and ensured that police must investigate rape cases fully and effectively. It also means that disabled people and their families have a right to a say in decisions about their care. Its benefits are unquestionable.

We will analyse these proposals carefully. We will welcome any changes which would strengthen protections and oppose any that might reduce or weaken them. We will respond to the consultation in due course.
