Commission comments on rise in hate crime

Published: 13 October 2016

Commenting in response to a new Home Office report, which shows a 41% increase in race or religious hate crime since the EU referendum, EHRC Chair, David Isaac, said:

These figures make it very clear that some people used the referendum result to justify their deplorable views and promote intolerance and hatred. We cannot allow this to continue and we must do all we can to bring the country back together. No one should have to suffer any form of hate crime and we encourage anyone who experiences it to report it immediately. We are working with a number of embassies and business groups to share information on how to report any incident and to improve understanding of the problem.
